Since 2020, new laws have come into place which affect homeowners who have a septic tank that discharges into a ditch or watercourse. It is no longer permissible for the liquid overflow to discharge to watercourses. Properties with these systems have two options. The first option is to install a soak-away system so the effluent goes into ground water and is naturally filtered. This may be difficult to achieve depending on space available. The alternative is to have a new sewage treatment plant installed. The benefits of a sewage treatment plant are that the liquid is processed to be significantly cleaner and consequently much less harmful when is discharged into a watercourse.
Current Government advice is that any non-compliant system needs to be updated as soon as possible or when the property is sold.
